Overview and Intent

The curriculum at Sandwich Junior School is designed to explore the concepts and ideals which we hold dear to us:

Community - The idea of community in all its guises is explored throughout the Sandwich Junior School Curriculum and exemplified by our Wolf Core Value. We will explore how our own local community is formed and how it reflects our rich local history, whilst also gaining an understanding of how a wide range of communities different to ours function both now and in the past. We also aim to place our school at the heart of our locality by engaging with a variety of local people and groups, representing ourselves in the wider locality. In addition to this, we will also aim to give our children an understanding of their position in a much wider global community as valuable and responsible citizens.

Diversity - Across our school community, we value the concept of diversity and embracing the differences within all communities, learning from the experiences of others both present and past. There is no room for prejudice of any kind within our school and we endeavour to teach the children through real life scenarios and historical precedent the value of being knowledgeable and understanding about all cultures and backgrounds. Our Curriculum opens hearts and minds to this way of thinking through a wide variety of subjects from History and Geography to Reading and RE, in addition to forming a major focus for PSHE work throughout the school.

Resilience - Our school community never gives up trying to excel and make themselves better. Resilience is a word which we feel our children embody in their approach to both the Curriculum and also to the challenges which life presents. This is exemplified by our Core Value of the Salmon as it swims against the tide, never simply taking the easy option. We have designed the Curriculum to challenge the thinking and physical actions of children and to show them that if they really try, then they will be rewarded with success.

A Love and Understanding of Language - The Sandwich Junior School Curriculum is designed with the richness of language and exploration of vocabulary in mind. As the children progress through the Key Stage, they will continuously encounter a seam of rich vocabulary in many different subjects. As they visit and revisit specific conceptual words their knowledge of these terms will develop until the point where they are able to understand, discuss and apply these terms to a wide variety of contexts. By the time children leave the school we aim to give them a lexicon which they can then take onto the next phase of their education and beyond.

Our Values

At Sandwich Junior School, the pupils and staff uphold our Core Values, which are at the centre of our school ethos and all that we do. They were first established by the pupils of our school, who chose specific animals that they felt represented the values and attitudes they should show every day, at school and at home:

The Wolf

Working together as a Wolf Pack, we are a community. Helping peers in difficult times, and celebrating our successes.

The Salmon

We always try our best – showing resilience, we never give up. We are always striving to reach the top and take risks with learning, as that is when we make our biggest leaps forward.

The Eagle

Aiming high to achieve the best we can be, and soaring high to reach our potential.

The Dolphin

When children enjoy their learning, they will achieve more.
